Scarlett's canvas layout...

Greetings Crop Stop Fans!  Its Thursday and that means you get some guest action today. I am super happy to be here with a tutorial.  It took me a bit to decide what I should do for you all and then it struck me, a LO on canvas would be fun for both you and me! So lets get our hands messy and a beautiful piece for our walls completed shall we?
Step One: Begin by selecting a canvas to work and prime it with a layer or two of gesso.  I am working on an 8x10 flat canvas, but you can choose any size that suits your fancy.  This just happens to be what was within my reach at the time I started the project.  I love to use various canvases and they all work well.  If you use an open back canvas please know using something to support the middle is a good idea - books are great for this.

Once your gesso has dried (this gives the canvas some tooth, or in other words a surface that won't suck your mediums in to it) lay your stencil over the canvas and secure it in place with some tape.  I am using The Crafter's Workshop Aboriginal Stencil.  This is available in the store in the 6x6 size.  Use a palette knife or other tool to spread modeling paste, generously, over the stencil to cover the entire canvas.

Once you remove the stencil it will look like this:

Now comes the fun part!  Time to get inky!!  Grab your Dylusions sprays...
Step Two: One of my favorite things to do with the Dyan Reaveley Dylusions sprays is to create rainbow effects. I've positioned my bottles where I've used the sprays to help you understand the process.   Begin by spraying some Lemon Zest in the upper left corner and bring it down toward the middle, then some Pure Sunshine (my favorite) in in the middle area overlapping the Lemon Zest just a tad and slightly toward the bottom left.  Be sure to leave white spaces - you do not want to cover up the entire canvas with these colors or you'll end up with a muddy mess! Now grab some Bubblegum Pink and spray it  in the upper right hand corner.  The fine mist that spreads out created some orange.  With your Vibrant Turquoise spray at the bottom left  and the fine mist will create some green.  If you have any questions please feel free to ask away in the comments and I'll get back to you.  I also suggest practicing this out on some scraps of cardstock or watercolor paper is even better.

Here is a close up of the piece when all colors were applied and dry:

Step Three: Grab a circular stamp, I used the clear circular element from the Claudine Hellmuth Bloom stamp set sent to me to work with, and ink it up with some paint.  Now I know this might sound scary but I promise with a little bit of dish soap and some luke warm water it will come clean.  Pounce the paint on your stamp and apply the stamp around the circular elements of the Aboriginal stencil.  While the paint is still wet sprinkle some Ranger Thistle Dry Fine Glitter. The paint will act as an adhesive for the glitter.  Doing this adds some extra interest to the background and breaks up the pattern.

Now we're ready to start working on this surface like any typical LO.
Step Four: Emboss a piece of vellum using the Couture Creations, Limited Edition Serenity Collection- Damask embossing folder.  This piece will be used for layering and will help tone down some of the brightness of the piece allowing photos and focal points to stand out against the background. Plus embossed vellum is just gorgeous!

Cut down vellum to work with your photo sizes.  I used sizing about half an inch larger than my photos.

Choose some patterned paper to go behind your vellum.  When choosing your paper go with light colors and subtle patterns.  This will allow for the texture of the embossing to still shine and not be overrun by what is underneath.

Step Five: Time to layer everything up.  Apply some tissue paper to the canvas with gel medium.  Add embossed vellum, photo, word tag, filmstrip, and letter stickers.

Step Six: Add washi tape, ticket, word, and wood veneer camera to left corner of upper photo.  Add lower embossed vellum and photo.

Step Seven: Add title letters, washi tape, overlay, ticket, hidden journaling, and paperclip.

Step Eight: Add doodling to title letters and around embossed vellum.  Add little bits of details - wood veneer stars, sequins of all sorts, and ink splatters.  My apologies for the blurriness of this shot.  I took it several times and it just wouldn't come out clear.

Step Nine: To finish off the canvas, if you're working on a flat one, attach a piece or green organdy ribbon to the back of the canvas using hot glue so it can be hung up.

And here's what the finished canvas looks like in full:

I love the richness of the Dylusions inks, the softness the embossed vellum brings, and the sparkle from the Stickles glitter.  Together it all just works.  If you have any questions as to how to create this type of look yourself please don't hesitate to ask - that is what I am here for.  Hope you enjoyed today's tutorial and give some of the techniques a try.

See you next week!

Great, wonderful work, Scarlett! I wonder if the same technique would work with a sketch book paper material?
